The squeal of tires could be heard as the vehicles sped away from The Amaranthine and headed for the outskirts of the city. Wounded men and women littered the floor of the truck beds, blood puddling and dripping from the rear of the vehicles as they sped through the darkened streets of New Babylon. On they raced, soon leaving the city proper and ending up at the Holy Valley Monastery. Once there, the trucks skidded to a halt and the backs were dropped. Monks in their habits rushed to the back of the trucks with litters, helping the wounded within. Those that didn't survive the trip back to their base of operations were taken to the barn. A funeral mass would be held for them the next morning.

Marshall Stephen Tieg, leader of the Brotherhood's Martial contingent, was sitting to one side as he watched his brothers and sisters being worked on. He had a monk working stitching up a knife wound in his abdomen. Luckily it hadn't shredded his large intestine, as the blade was a short one. His heart was heavy, as too many of his soldiers were simply having sheets pulled up over them. The casualty rate was disastrous: 40%, if not higher. There wasn't a single person that had escaped that disaster at The Amaranthine this night without injury. He was watching a young woman - barely 25 years of age - have a sheet draped over her lifeless face when David came up behind him.

"Stephen, how bad?" His rich, smooth voice spearing into Stephen's soul.

"Too many, Grand Master." The monk finished with Stephen's wound and moved on to help the others. David walked up, putting a hand on Stephen's shoulder. "Come now Stephen, mistakes happen. We'll identify what went wrong, correct our procedures, then try again."

Stephen got up angrily, grabbing his shirt to put it back on. "I already know what went wrong! Some other sucker heads decided to hit the party at the same time as us. And not to mention some of those female hunters Erasmus mentioned showed up. I thought they weren't even in the city yet. ERASMUS!"

The Marshall yelled and the Commander of their intelligence division came running over from where his laptop was setup. "Damn Steve, you alright?" He didn't get to say anything further as the Marshall jammed his finger in his chest. "Where the fuck did those girls come from? I watched one of my guys get a hole blown in his chest from a .50 cal rifle. That's not something you'd find from a group 'just getting into town'. What the fuck is going on? Where's your intel?!"

Erasmus quailed under the onslaught from the Marshall. Strangely David just stood back, his hands behind his back. "I told you, my intel here is spotty. We're having trouble getting informants in the city. My guy from the slums said something might have been up about the party, but he didn't go into details. He's here now if you want to talk to him."

Erasmus indicated a shifty looking character that seemed to be entirely too interested in what was happening in the monastery than providing intelligence - if he had any at all. David walked over to the man with Stephen at his side. "Young man, you're our friend in St. Francis' Village?" The man just smiled crookedly, his teeth stained yellow and broken. "Yes sir. I have eyes everywhere and see all. It's why your man relies upon me for information."

David simply nodded, "Very well then. If you see all, then why didn't you see this attack coming?" The man immediately started dodging. "Well you see, the vamps have St. Francis all locked up. They ain't those high and mighty vamps either. No sir, not the ones that live in the city proper. No sir, these ones are a little more wild, and a little more disorganized."

David continued nodding, making sounds like he was listening to what the man was saying. "Interesting. And you know all this how?"

The man shrugged. "I just know things. I see things, speak to people that hear other things. Eventually things get back to me, and I share that information with your man." He gestured to Erasmus.

David just smiled, looking the man over, his eyes taking in his apparel and look. "Which we pay you a modest fee for, correct? I believe it was $500 for the information leading to our assault on the hotel tonight, correct?"

The man smiled again. "Yes sir. I still have it, right here in my pocket too."

David smiled again. "Oh, that's perfect." He pulled his hands out from behind his back and was holding a Glock 21. He shot the informant in the stomach, causing the man to drop to the floor, squealing in pain. David walked up to the man, who was trying to ask why when David put two more in his chest, then one in his head. Turning back towards Stephen and Erasmus, he replaced the gun in his back holster.

"No one that's been paid $500 for information can afford $2000 Tom Ford Oxfords."

The two men looked behind David, at the man's shoes. The expensive shoes were clearly visible now that his pants weren't hiding them.

"He was on someone's take. I want to find out whose. Erasmus, dig into his personal history. His contacts, his associates, his finances. Everything you can on him. Stephen, we need you to continue training our men. Recruit more from the pious of this city. Let them know that the Lord's Vengeance has come to New Babylon, and we will burn the corruption from this city, starting with the demons that stalk the night, and all who associate with them. Now go."

The two men left David, who went over to one of his soldiers and knelt down. The young man was slowly dying, the red X on his forehead marking him as a casualty that could not be saved. He took the boy's hand, feeling his grip weakening. He kissed the young man's hand, then leaned over, kissing the boy on his forehead, directly on the red X. He then did something that he would do for every casualty that night.

"The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures..."

The Mass had been held for the fatalities of the blown assault on Erebos, and the final tallies were taken. Of the forty operatives sent that night, only eleven were walking this day. Sixteen people were laid to rest in the monastery's cemetary. Thirteen were still being tended to by the monks that resided here. Every single one had wounds of some sort. It was a debacle. David had sent half of his strength into that meat grinder, and a little over a quarter of them were walking today. He had put out the call for more men and resources from elsewhere in the world. He would rally the men and bide his time - for now.

Moving back into the side chapel he used for his own private prayers, he knelt down, blessing himself. Once that was done, he began to pray.

"Heavenly Father, I have done your bidding. I have taken the war to the Unholy, to the denizens of the night that are damned in your sight. I have gathered the faithful to me, and through them, I exact divine retribution upon the Vampires and their Unholy ilk. Now though, we are tested like never before. So many good souls were sent to you, that now I need your help. Please, send me a sign, a portent, that the path we are on is the correct one. Please oh Lord, send me any assistance that you can give. Amen."

He stayed there, on his knees and his hands clasped together as he waited for some form of Divine Intervention.

The roar of the engine on the monstrosity of Rubì's bike could be heard several minutes before she actually drove up in front of the monastery. Her eyes took in few monks and members that were still outside and the dark and looming mood that hung over them. Behind the glass of her helmet, her bloodred lips smirked as she came to a full stop and kicked down the foot to support her bike. Stopping the engine she took off her helmet and shook her long dark hair loose. Dark painted eyes looked at the few who stared at her and hung the helmet on the bike before stepping off.

Her heels digging into the ground as she stood and dropped her leather jacket on the bike. But not before taking out a lollipop and tearing off the plastic before sticking it in her mouth. Several of the monks stared at her attire, the low pants and cropped denim top, and wondered for a moment if it was her lack of cover or the numerous scars on her skin that bothered the chaste men. Blowing one of them a kiss and a wink she turned on her heel and walked inside the building looking for the one man she wanted to see.

Coming inside she could hear mass going on inside and understood it had to be the funeral for the men lost at the hotel. They might not be her brothers and sisters in her heart, but her Catholic uprising compelled her to stand outside until it was done. When it was she stood leaned against a wall and sighed softly before she did the sign of the cross and touched the small gold cross around her neck.

"Requiesce in pace, perdiste almas.*"

Not long after the rest of the organization emptied the room and each that saw her stared, probably wondering who the mean looking lady was. Her eyes watched the crowd with a bent head and through her sunglasses, looking for him, but he did not come out. Moments later she was alone and still no David Stern. Taking off her sunglasses she pushed away from the wall and with the taste of strawberries in her mouth from her candy, she walked inside to look for him.

"Please oh Lord, send me any assistance that you can give. Amen."

She could hear a male voice she would have recognized anywhere. Her eidetic memory having burned it into her mind years ago. The sound of her heels on the stone floor could be heard as she moved to the side chapel, stopping outside it and taking out her lollipop before speaking.

"No sure he sent me Anciano*... But I am here to offer assistance."

The Spanish accent dripping heavily from her cold voice when she spoke. Waiting for him to reply she crossed her arms and put the candy back between ruby lips.

((Requiesce in pace, perdiste almas = Rest in peace you lost souls*/ Anciano = Old man*))

David stood up and turned, his gaze falling onto the luscious form that was Rubì, his gaze unconsciously sweeping to take in all that was her. She had blossomed nicely and grown to be one of his most proficient hunters. The look in his eyes was of a man that was hungry for what he could see in front of himself, but then his face changed to a scowl. He buried his lust beneath an avalanche of hate, and stepped closer to the fiery Latina. His hand flinched ever so slightly to the Glock 21 he kept in the small of his back.

"My dearest Rubì, the Lord of Heaven must have sent you, as you are one of my most dearest Hunters. Your total number of slain creatures of the night easily surpasses most of my soldiers. And after last night, we are in much need of your...abilities."

He didn't trust her, not as far as he could throw her. She was raised by the Vampires, and had loved them. He saw it in her face just before she killed her own mother. But she did do it. She had killed her mother, and on his orders. So either she truly was a member of the Brotherhood, or she was an expert at faking it.

Well, she was a woman, so she could very well be the latter.

If it was the latter, than her hatred had to be as deep and fast flowing as his own. He wanted to see all the creatures of the dark flayed and burned, to let Homo Sapiens retain their place at the top of the food chain, as God Himself had willed it. These Kindred and all their like were antithesis to all that was Holy, and it was his Sacred Duty to ensure every last one of them met their Final Death.

"Your trip wasn't too taxing, I hope? Though I assume you enjoy riding that mechanical monstrosity as much as you can. You arrived just after Mass this morning. Have you repented your sins lately?" He didn't care one whit if she had or not, but he wasn't quite yet ready to take her into the command center, to see the beginnings of their infiltration into New Babylon.

And he wasn't sure why.

For a moment she could see the same in his eyes as she did in every man when they met her. The way their eyes fell over her curves and gaze got hungry for more. She was impressed though when he seemed to be able to ignore and push it out of his mind, but she didn't show it. Hearing him call her dearest cut through her like acid, making her feel sick to her gut. But her face turned into a cocky smirk like she was revelling in his praise of her hunting talents.

"It is good to see you Señor, I regret not having spent more time with headquarters, it's been too long. And I just do what any other soldier would in war."

When he mentioned the disaster at the hotel she got a dark and saddened look on her face. The face of someone having deep regrets and guilt weighing down.

"That is why I am here... I got into town about a month ago, but I wanted to get settled before I came here and reported my presence... Forgive me. I should have been there with the rest of you, maybe I could have made a difference. But I am here now and ready to do my part."

Her voice was just as hard, teeth clenched together as her fist did the same. Anger and guilt coming off her in waves. Even as her mind was singing. He was so close. She had a knife in her boot, it would be so easy to get it and place it right in his gut... Patience. She had to have it, it wasn't enough to take down him, she needed the entire damn organization to die. And for that, she needed to be inside it. Maybe she could use the flicker of lust she had seen in his gaze? A smile came over her face as she huffed amused.

"It was a glorious trip. My baby purred all the way here. She is outside if you want to give her a spin."

She didn't think he was going to accept, but she was damn proud of her baby and loved showing her off. The mention of repentance almost made her roll her eyes. Of course she had, she had grown up with a priest after her mother, and the religion was imprinted in her psyche. To him, she just smiled her usual half smile and nodded before touching the cross around her neck.

"Of course I have. Last Sunday. There is a Catholic church at the edge of St.Francis Village where I have gotten an apartment."

His eyes went cold as she mentioned she had been in town a whole month, and had not reported in.

"I sent out explicit orders to all members to report their locations, as we were trying to gather our forces upon moving here. You did not report in, so I assumed you were still in Arizona. Do not disobey orders again."

Not waiting for her rebuttal, he walked past her, making for the command center, his anger overriding his sense of judgment. "I shall pass on riding your mechanical beast, that is your pleasure, not mine." Upon entering the command center, he gestured to Stephen and Erasmus. "You know the Marshall and the Commander, so let's skip to the briefing."

As David made his way over to the map of New Babylon, Stephen nodded in greetings to Rubi whilst Erasmus gave her a smile and a slight wave, before diving back into whatever he was working on with his laptop. "We have made little headway into the affluent areas of the city. That is where we believe the majority of the bastards are located. We have made some headway into St. Francis' Village. There we've been able to make several contacts, though some of them have proven to be less than reliable. He was in the pay of one of the demons here in the city, but Erasmus has been working to find out which one. I executed him right here in the monastery."

Erasmus spoke up from his corner. "Looks like he was getting payments from some company called Imogen Cybernetics. I've been trying to get into their financials, but they are unusually robust for a corporation that wants to help those that lose limbs. Though one of the members of the board did peak my interest when he didn't have a picture on the website. So I did some digging, and found out his real name."

He spun the laptop around, and on it was a picture of Victor LaGuardia. "This is Vittorio LaGuardia, and he's been on our radar before. I'll bet my server farm that he's a sucker head. He's also connected to a club called the Cybermachine in the same part of town. I've managed to hack my way into his car's GPS, and it goes there every night, and leaves shortly before dawn. That just screams a vampire, and his hideout. Probably his source of cash, along with Imogen."

David just smiled at Erasmus, "Good work Erasmus. So we'll start there. We'll try to get some contacts into that club, the Cybermachine is it? What a dreadful name for a club. Now, who would do best to infiltrate the club?" He looked around, before his gaze fell on Rubi, and a slight smile crept onto his face.

His anger at her not having reported in made her happier than she could describe. She couldn't wait to see what other expressions she could get out of him. Not that she could show it to him, on her face she was guilt-ridden and broken about her own mistake. Of course, she had not reported in, it had been so much fun to watch the party from a distance. When he moved past her she just turned on her heel and followed him. Finally, he was taking her where she wanted.

"You sure amigo?"

Of course he was sure, and of course, he was never going to get on her bike. She would rather drive it head first into a brick wall than let him touch her baby. Following him inside the command centre she looked to her side and noticed another face that was etched into her mind. Nodding to Stephen and Erasmus with an arched brow she held her focus on David. While he spoke she stood there with her weight on one foot tapping the other silently and her arms crossed, secretly wanting to push up her cleavage.

Her tongue turned the lollipop in her mouth as she listened, her eyes jumping from person to person that spoke.

"I hear some stuff as well. Some of the pendejos that live in the village are loudmouths. Which is why I decided to settle there."

Her eyes watched as Erasmus turned the computer and showed them the picture. Yeah, she had seen the man at the party, through the scope of her rifle. Just to make matters worse and hopefully get some looks she bent forward like she was looking more closely at the picture before she huffed and smirked.

"That zorra? I will have his cojones around my neck by dawn"

She spent a few more moments while David was speaking to really etch all that she could see on the screen into her memory before rising up again. Her lollipop now almost gone she crushed it between her teeth and threw the stick in the trash before noticing the way David was looking at her. Smirking she laughed.

"Sì, Sì, Señor. Bartender, or dancer?"

Looking excited at the prospect she did a wiggle of her hips to show that she had enough latina in her to be able to do both.

((Amigo = Friend/ zorra = bitch / cojones = testicles/ Sì señor =Yes Sir.))

David smiled slightly at the thought of her making her way into the den of the beast. Perhaps they'd do him the favor of ridding him of this temptress. He also glanced at Stephen and Erasmus, watching how his Intelligence Commander kept glancing eyes at the woman. He'd have to have a talk with the young man, reminding him to keep his mind on his duties, and not the sins of the flesh.

Not that he didn't mind stealing a glance at Rubi himself, but he knew how to keep his baser self under control.

"If he has dancers, then by all means attempt that. If not, find another way in. I don't care if you have to be a janitor or a maid, just get in there. I want regular weekly reports, starting with the end of the week. Fail to report in, and I'll take that bike of yours and melt it for bullets. I'll find you a nice Chevy Nova to drive around in though, so you have some freedom of travel."

He turned his attention to Stephen. "Marshall, tell me of the recruiting efforts."

Marshall Tieg just glared at David. "I've only started putting feelers out last night. Aside from those already in place, we haven't had any new bites. Anyone we do find that seems competent enough to hold a gun, is questioned further. We have a couple people that specialize in feeling people out. Whilst they do that, Erasmus does a more thorough background check of them. We don't want any more leaks."

David and Stephen looked towards Erasmus, who cringed slightly under their gaze. "I've instituted more thorough and broader background checks on all new recruits. I've also started running the same checks on all current members. If we're hunting for rats, we might as well check the ones that are here already."

David simply smiled again. "Good, if we have any rats on our ship, you will soon find them."

Such fun there were to be had here. She had also noticed how Erasmus kept casting glances when he thought no one was looking. Perfect. Religion and suppressed men, maybe the way to destroying them would be easier than she had thought. Not that she really had a need for the man, but he could be holding useful information. So it might be worth it. David's voice drew her focus back to him, with still crossed arms she tapped her elbow with a black painted nail like she was in deep thought.

A single nod was given David when he said he wanted weekly reports. That was fair, nothing weird with a catholic latina wanting to go to church on Sundays. While the men talked about the recruiting she stood still and made a mental list of all the things she would need to fix before this mission. To the men, she would have seemed to be in deep thought, barely paying attention to what they were talking about. Her eidetic memory still saving it all, even though her eyes didn't even look at them until they were done.

"I will need a new identity and the papers to match. A resume would be good as well. Since he won't need many contacts to figure out my name is associated with being a bounty hunter. And I assume he has the right contacts to find it, at least if I use my real name."

She looked at David with her coffee-coloured eyes while she spoke only to turn to Erasmus when she was done. Her arms uncrossed and she hooked her thumbs in the belt loops on her pants, seemingly innocently enough pulling the attention down to the edge of her pants.

"You seem to be the man to help with that. Or what lindo*?"

Her smile was warm and she looked at him a moment before she turned back to David with the same warm smile and determination in her eyes.

"If El Jefe* agrees of course."

Nah, seducing the young man would be too easy. Then it was much more fun to see just how many glances she could lure out of the statue before her. So rigid and strong-willed. It would be an absolute pleasure to trick him.

*((Lindo = Typical Spanish endearment use about males that roughly means "pretty boy" // El Jefe = The boss.))

David was about to reply that she should talk to Erasmus when she did that very thing, turning her attention to the young man behind the lap top. He continued his discussions with Stephen about the recruiting and infiltration of the city...

Erasmus looked up at Rubi as she spoke to him, giving her a smile. "Yeah, I got you covered Rubi. Real California Driver's License, fake social security card, glowing resume. I can go back as far as middle school information if you want. All depends on what cover you want exactly. Just let me know, and I'll stay up all night making it for you."

The young man could barely contain his enthusiasm as their attention was directed back at David by Rubi's question. David looked up to her and nodded, giving his consent. He gave a slight glare at Erasmus, wondering if the young man was going to break his vows and jump the woman right then and there. The...boy definitely needed some repentance.

"You are welcome to leave the bike here Rubi. That conveyance of yours sticks out like a sore thumb. If you're going to be staying in St. Francis' Village, I'd recommend getting something a little more fitting to the neighborhood. Unless that is, you plan on setting up in another part of town?" He wanted as much information as possible. That way he'd be able to track her if needed.

"Ay lindo, you spoil me."

Rubì laughed and smiled at him when he said he could stay up all night fixing it for her. She was in no rush, but the man seemed to in one to please her. Her hand reached into the back pocket of her pants and pulled out a new lollipop that she tore the plastic off and pointed at Erasmus with it.

"Middle school sounds good. Make me from out of town, makes it easier to act completely clueless if I am not even from here. And give me the background of a bartender, no college. Instead, give me a detailed work history. No means and no real future, not a soul in the place will notice more than my looks."

Pleased with the details of her backstory she turned back to David when he spoke. The lollipop not between lush lips. When he was done she shook her head.

"No need Jefe. I got her stored away in a storage facility out of the village. Wouldn't want the wrong people to recognize her as you say. I got no wheels in the village, public transportation is what the poor folk use. I intend to stay in the village yes. At least for now. No one gives a shit about you there, so it's the perfect place to hide."

She had no interest in telling him where she hid her baby, especially since she had quite the collection of things there with her that she didn't want people to see. And there was no need of telling him of the other apartment she had acquired in one of the better districts. Let him think she was only thinking about her mission and keeping her identity hidden. Taking a few steps closer to him and bending forward over a table she grabbed a pen and paper an quickly wrote down her address and cell number on it before handing it to David.

"That's the number I am using currently. I am going to get another one for my resume and papers, but this is a burner cell that I will change out regularly. I will give the next number when I do."

Standing there she looked right at him holding the piece of paper out. Her face the perfect mask of cooperation and her eyes shining invitingly.

Erasmus smiled at her once again, and dove into the work. True to his word, he'd spend all night working and come morning, she'd have a new identity waiting for her.

David simply nodded as she informed him of her plans and how she was to going to use public transportation. He couldn't help but have his gaze diverted when she reached for the pen and paper. Quickly reaching out and taking the paper with her number on it, he looked it over then stuffed it in his vest pocket. "Very well. Erasmus will contact you in the morning once he has your cover created. I leave the minutiae of the infiltration up to you. If you have nothing further, you are free to leave."

He stood there waiting to see if she had anything further to discuss, whilst letting his peripheral vision pay attention to other matters. The Lord must really wish to test David with her. He understood now why Lust was one of the seven deadly sins.

The way Erasmus smiled at her made her wink back to him. It was not going to be hard to keep him on her side at least. Then it would be much harder with David and the ever silent Stephen. Her eyes fell back to the two older men and smiled when David took the piece of paper from her.

"Sounds good Jefe. I will make contact with the club as soon as I have a new identity. And I will see you all for confessions on Sunday."

Of course, by confessions, she mostly meant giving them a report on her progress. Laughing softly at her own joke she winked playfully to David like she didn't think much more of it than her playing around. In reality, she didn't really want to leave yet. She wanted a reason to stick around and mess more with David. But she could read the room and she knew he was eager to get her out of his sight.

"I got nothing more. So I guess I will see you tomorrow lindo, when I come to pick up my new identity."

Getting ready to leave she turned and bowed her head in respect to Stephen before she turned to David. Her eyes saying she hoped to see him to the next day before nodding again and turning around. Waving to the men she didn't turn again to look at them.

"Hasta Mañana boys"

And with that, she left and walked outside to her bike. She got dressed quickly and swung her leg over the monstrosity, reared the engine and speed out of the place with a roar of the engine. A smile plastered on her face, that had gone much better than it could have.

David watched her go, and let his eyes wander across her backside. He may be a man of God, but he could appreciate beauty when he saw it. As she exited, and he eventually heard her bike roar off, he turned to Stephen. "I want her bolt holes found. I want to know everywhere she goes, everything she does." Stephen nodded as David turned his attention to Erasmus. "Commander Blithe, if you can take your mind of sinful thoughts of Miss Caldera for one moment, I have orders for you as well."

The man looked suitably chastised as he looked at the Grand Master. "What would you have me do, Grand Master?"

David just stared for a moment, as if weighing the young man's soul. "I want you to track Miss Caldera, assist Marshall Tieg in tracking her movements. I don't have complete trust in her, nor should any of you. She is the Devil in the flesh. Best not forget it." With that said, he retired to his quarters, whilst Erasmus and Stephen worked on their delegated tasks.
