How to Get Your Story Moving

How to Get Your Story Moving

Create the most powerful narrative hook you can. Set big questions to which the reader wants the answer. Will she find happiness? Will the murderer be found?

Then set small initial goals, to get the characters scurrying off. Can the heroine get through this hellish day at work?

Start with action rather than description. You don't have to start with a car exploding, Hollywood style, but an explosion of some sort is a good idea. This can be some small thing - a piece of gossip that affects your heroine's view of the world, or a mysterious letter. But it should change something at some level and get the cog wheels of the story turning.
